Help

Everything you need to get going, and answers to common questions.

Getting started

PairIt reads each card's prompt aloud. Speak your answer. The app listens, scores it with fuzzy matching (so minor typos and close variations count as correct), and reads the result. Then the next card begins. The whole loop is hands-free; you never need to touch the screen.

  1. Pick a deck. 16 built-in decks need no account at all.
  2. Choose a review order (Spaced is recommended).
  3. Put in your headphones, press start, and answer out loud.
Tip: signing in (Apple or Google, in Settings → Account) is optional. It backs up your decks and lets you edit them on a computer at app.pairit.cards.

Voice commands

You can say these at any time during a session:

After you finish a deck: "Replay", "Replay missed", "New deck" or "Stop". Say "What can I say?" at any time to hear the options for where you are.

Review order

Choose how cards are presented in Settings → Session options (tick "Show on start screen" to also put the control on the main screen). It applies to every deck.

Spaced (recommended)

The app prioritizes the cards you're most overdue to review. Answer correctly and confidently and a card won't reappear for days or weeks. Answer incorrectly and it comes back sooner. Over time, practice concentrates on the cards you actually need.

Random

Cards are shuffled each session. Your answer history is still recorded in the background and counts when you switch to Spaced.

In Order

Cards play in the exact order of the deck, the same order you see when you edit it. Due dates are ignored.

Pin and Snooze

Two optional buttons sit under the question while a session runs, and both also work by voice.

Both work the same way in every review order.

Decks

Built-in decks

16 decks ship with the app, no Google account needed. Tap "Built-in Decks" on the start screen to browse them. Topics include world capitals, US state capitals, US presidents, planets and space, dinosaurs, human anatomy, medical abbreviations, Spanish and French phrases, multiplication tables, phobias, famous quotes, movie quotes, 90s pop culture, riddles and trivia.

Your own decks (My Decks)

Tap "My Decks" on the start screen. Paste a list of prompts and answers to create a deck, or copy a built-in deck and change it. Open a deck to add cards, rename it, export it or reset its progress. A deleted deck stays in "Recently deleted" for 30 days, where you can restore it.

Built-in decks are read-only, but you can copy one into My Decks and edit your copy; the original stays as it was.

Editing on the web

Sign in at app.pairit.cards with the same Apple or Google account you use on your phone to see and edit your decks from a computer. Changes sync to your phone.

Microphone access

PairIt cannot hear your answers without microphone permission.

After granting permission, refresh the page or restart the app.

FAQ

Do I need an account?

No. The built-in decks and My Decks work without signing in. An account (Sign in with Apple or Google, in Settings → Account) is optional and only adds backup and sync of your decks across your devices.

Why doesn't my microphone work?

See Microphone access above. After granting permission, refresh the page or restart the app.

What is "Spaced" ordering and how does it learn?

Spaced mode uses spaced repetition, a research-backed technique that shows you cards at increasing intervals based on how well you know them. Over time it concentrates your practice on the cards you actually need to work on.

What do Pin and Snooze do?

"Pin" (📌) keeps a card at the front of every session until you unpin it, useful when you want to drill something. "Snooze" (😴) hides a card for a set number of days; it reappears automatically once the snooze expires. Both work the same way regardless of which review order (Spaced / Random / In Order) you've chosen.

Does it work while I'm running or driving?

Yes, that's exactly what it's designed for. Once a session starts, everything is audio: it speaks questions, listens for your answers and reads the result. You never need to look at the screen.

Why did it mark my answer wrong even though it was right?

The app uses fuzzy text matching on what the speech recognizer heard. If the recognizer mishears you, the match can fail. Common causes are background noise, unusual proper nouns or a strong accent. You can tap the text area to type your answer. If a card is consistently misrecognized, edit it in My Decks to use a simpler spelling.

Where is my practice data stored?

Your session history is stored on your device. If you've opted into the beta, a summary of each answer (deck name, correct or incorrect, timestamp) is sent to a private server to help improve the app. See the privacy policy for details.

Can I change a built-in deck?

Built-in decks are read-only, but you can copy one into My Decks and then add, remove or edit cards in your copy. The original stays as it was.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

The app is in beta and feedback is very welcome. Email support@pairit.cards with what happened and, if you can, which deck and device or browser you were using.
